The Journalists International Forum For Migration (JIFORM) has praised the Ogun State Police Command for the speedy intervention leading to the rescue of 22 teenagers and the arrest of some suspected human traffickers at a brothel in Abeokuta at the weekend.
Also, the body with over 300 journalists covering migration matters across the globe praised the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) for showing concern on the matter too.
“Our engagement with the NAPTIP on this incident days ago had been fruitful leading to prompt deployment of officers to track those involved. The positive spirit from the police and the NAPTIP is something we so cherished”, JIFORM statement said.
Following a tip-off, media outcry and agitations by the JIFORM, the police raided Kolab Hotel, Ayetoro, Abeokuta from where 22 teenage girls between the ages 10-14 being used as sexual workers were rescued.
Ajibola Abayomi, President of JIFORM after interaction with the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, praised the police for the prompt rescue and arrest of the suspects.
He said,“with this intervention, the Ogun police command has recorded another excellent landmark in the fight against crime.”
The JIFORM President said that without the immediate manhunt launched by the police, the suspected human traffickers and their cohorts would have attempted to cover up their acts as usual.
He called for more inter-agency collaboration between the police and the NAPTIP and urged the police to also intensify efforts to rescue a 16-years old Cross River State who was brought into the picture as one of the victims through the Punch Newspaper’s report.
“Both the media and the public have a duty to work with police to fight crime by supplying the officers with truthful and useful information to combat crime. One thing that excites us is the inter-agency collaboration between the police and NAPTIP against human trafficking in Nigeria.”
The Ogun State Police Spokesman promised that all the necessary machineries would be deployed to fish out everyone involved in the trafficking of kids.
He also pledged police’s continuous collaboration with the NAPTIP on human trafficking matters.
Oyeyemi said Ogun police officers were intensifying investigation with a view to rescue other victims and arrest all the human traffickers in the state.
