GOODWILL MESSAGE DELIVERED BY THE HEAD OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS OF THE GHANA IMMIGRATION SERVICE, SUPT. MICHAEL AMOAKO-ATTA AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION SUMMIT ON OCTOBER 15, 2020 VIA WEBINAR.
Your Excellency, the Chief Host;
President and Members of the Journalists International Forum for Migration;
Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is an honour and a pleasure to be part of the 2nd edition of the International Migration Summit which brings together erudite scholars with diverse background from different spheres of the globe to share ideas on how to manage migration effectively.
On behalf of the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Officers and Men of the Ghana Immigration Service, I would like to extend our warmest compliments and regards to all members on the forum
Ladies and gentlemen, the surge and dynamism in migration across the globe and its associated socio-economic implications, especially, in this era of COVID-19 requires the needed collaboration, ideas and strategies to curb its negative consequences on mankind in order to reap the benefit thereof.
Therefore, our gathering here today, I believe will not only help us to acquire the essential elements for facilitating orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, but also, enjoy the attendant benefits of migration management.
This can be achieved through the sharing of ideas and experiences with the massive support of the media. The Media as the fourth estate of the realm has to play a frontline role in bringing to the fore the dangers inherent in irregular migration especially during this period of the pandemic and how best to manage migration to inure to the benefit of the continent.
I must add here that the success in containing the spread of the coronavirus has been largely due to the role the media played in educating the public and also raising the alarm where there has been shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to commend the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for putting together the migration governance framework to help manage migration effectively through which nation-states will ensure that the systemic requirements for good migration governance are in place.
The framework also ensures that migration is governed in an integrated and holistic way, responding to the need to consider mobile categories of people and address their needs for assistance in the event of an emergency, building resilience of individuals and communities, as well as ensuring opportunities for economic and social health of the State.
I would like to thank the organizers for their effort in putting this event together and for bringing together these great personalities to show us the way, and the appropriate strategies to be adopted. I wish us all a successful summit. Thank you for your attention
