The former President of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda has recommended a book authored by member African Union Labour Migration Advisory Committee, HE Dr Princess Kabuki Ocansey titled Deadly Work or Decent Work?  as a publication containing solutions to various forms of slavery African youths were subjected to in the Middle East.

Ocansey, a renowned labour expert with over 30 years experience is a Principal Consultant to the Sierra Leonean government training thousands of youths in the country to be hired as labour workers in several parts of the world.

Banda made the suggestion while presenting the book at the launch of Transfer To Transform Project and the launch of Decent Work or Deadly Work? at Freetown, Sierra Leone on Tuesday.

The occasion was one of the series of the African Migration Summit (AMS) events powered by the Journalists International Forum For Migration (JIFORM), Nigeria and the Nekotech Centre for Excellence, Ghana.

The former president congratulated the President of the country, Julius Maada Bio, describing him as the greatest champion for the rights of women and girls.

She said the president was personally committed to fighting gender-based violence adding that “African women are following your tireless efforts in ensuring that women and girls of Sierra Leone are protected and on their behalf, I say thank you. We the women of Africa, look upon you as one of our greatest champions on this continent in this regard” she said.

Reviewing the publication, Banda stated: “This book touches on a crucial subject very dear to my heart. This subject of deadly work and the outcries of our daughters from the Middle East have constantly been on my mind. Most importantly, this book offers solutions and a roadmap to Decent Work in the Gulf States.

“In this book, Dr. Ocansey makes an urgent call for a multilateral platform for the Africa-Middle East Migration Process – much like the Colombo Process/Abu Dhabi Dialogue with Asia and the Middle East – to guide our nations to make a paradigm shift to decent work.

“Your championing SOS Decent Work is in line with SDGs 1, 5 and 8 as well as the AU Agenda 2063 to create the Africa we all want. I am pleased to be part of this launch as the Guest of Honor of the SOS Decent Work Program in Sierra Leone.”

The event had in attendance Mahomed Swarray, Minister of Information and Communication Sierra Leone who represented President Bio, chairman of the occasion and Minister for Labour and Social Security, Alpha O.Timbo, Minister of State of Labour and Employment, Nigeria Chief Festus Keyamo, SAN, Professor Joseph Teye from the University of Ghana and others.

At the event President Bio, Banda, Ocansey, Timbo and Keyamo were conferred with the African Presidential Migration Champion, Africanstateswoman Decent Work, Legendary Decent Work Service, Distinguished Ministerial Service and African Decent Work Crusader awards.
